Grand Opening Celebration Planned for Harmon's New Turf Field

J.C. Harmon High School will host a grand opening celebration of their new turf soccer and football field at Art Lawrence Stadium on Friday, August 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. Students, staff, parents and the community are invited.

The new all-weather field was installed over the summer and is the first of its kind in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. It measures 100,875 square-feet and is made of Astroturf synthetic turf. It is surrounded by a new structural spray track surface. New long jump runways and sand pits were also installed. The project was paid for with Capital Outlay funds (funds that can only be used for improvement of grounds, construction, remodeling, etc.)

The grand opening celebration will include a ribbon cutting on the field at 7 p.m. followed by the annual purple and white games featuring the football team and boys' soccer team.

Other highlights of the celebration will include:

  • Performances by marching band, choir and dance team
  • Introduction of the fall sports teams
  • Kids' activity zone (inflatables, face painting and more)
  • Community health information
  • Concessions
