2013-2014 School Year Begins August 12 for Most Students in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools

There are two official start dates for the 2013-2014 school year for most students in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS). Monday, August 12 will be the first full day of classes for K-5, plus 6th grade students at all middle schools except Northwest, and 9th grade students at Washington, Wyandotte, Schlagle and Harmon high schools. At Sumner Academy of Arts and Science, 8th grade students, plus students new to Sumner Academy, will begin classes on Monday, August 12. There will be a full day of classes for students at all grade levels on Monday, August 13.

New Stanley Elementary and Northwest Middle School follow a different school schedule. The first day of classes for New Stanley students is Monday, July 29, with an early dismissal. At Northwest Middle School, 6th grade students begin classes on Thursday, August 1. The first day for all students at Northwest will be Friday, August 2.

PreK students begin classes on Monday, August 12 with a Family Advocacy Day.

School Meals

Meal prices for the 2013-2014 are as follows:

  • $1.00 for elementary breakfast
  • $1.75 for elementary lunch
  • $1.15 for middle and high breakfast
  • $2.00 for middle and high lunch


The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools follows state regulations regarding immunizations for students. All students MUST comply with these regulations to attend school. All students returning to school for the 2013-2014 school year must be current on their immunizations.

Parents of returning students who are in need of additional immunizations before the fall, have been notified by letter. All students should be immunized before the new school year begins.

Parents of elementary and middle school students who are new to the district may call the district's Student Services Office, (913) 279-2248, with questions concerning the school their child will attend and enrollment information.

High school students who are new to the district must enroll with their parent/guardian during the New Student Enrollment period set in August at the Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th St. Information that must be provided at the time of enrollment includes: proof of residence such as a rental agreement, escrow agreement or utility bill (phone bills do not qualify); birth certificate; immunization records; and withdrawal information from the previous school. Transcripts from the child's previous school also are helpful. Enrollment dates and times are as follows:

August 5, 2013 - 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
August 6, 2013 - 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
August 7, 2013 - 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
August 8, 2013 - 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
August 9, 2013 - 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Parents who have a child who is entering the school district for the first time should bring the following items with them at the time of enrollment:

  • A birth certificate for each child enrolling in kindergarten or grade one – a birth certificate or other proof of age for all other students.
  • A Kansas certificate of immunization for each child.
  • A physical exam/health assessment for each child nine years of age or younger. Those coming from another school in Kansas must present a copy of the physical health assessment when enrolling in the KCK Public Schools.
  • A report card from the sending school or authorization for school transcripts. Children must be five years of age on or before August 31 to enter kindergarten. A child enrolling in first grade who did not attend kindergarten must be six years of age on or before August 31.
