Fine Arts

Integrated Arts Resource Center

The KCKPS Fine Arts Department consist of all classes associated with Visual Art, Music, Dance and Theatre.

The Fine Arts Department mission is to put beauty in our students' lives. We do this through quality instruction from highly qualified teachers in a comprehensive arts curriculum.

Students in grades K-5 receive instruction in one 50 minute visual art class and two 30 minute music classes each week. String instrument instruction is elective and begins in grade four. String students at this level have two 45 minute classes per week during the school day.

Students in grades 7-12 may elect to take a multitude of classes offered in the visual arts, choral and instrumental music, theatre, and (at Sumner Academy) dance. All classes meet during the school day, with performances and extra rehearsals scheduled in hours outside of the school day.

In addition to the curricular arts classes, additional experiences above and beyond the regular curriculum are provided through our Arts Partners plan. Arts Partners is a systemic roster of arts experiences provided through the Kansas City Young Audiences coordination of various metropolitan arts organizations, including the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, the Coterie Theatre, the Kansas City Repertory Theatre, the Theatre for Young America, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and others.
