School Highlights 2017 - 2018

  • Meet Your Teacher Night — A Back to School Night was offered for parents and students at the start of the school year to provide families an opportunity to find their classrooms and to meet their child's teacher to begin to develop a relationship with the teacher, which is important to student success.
  • Student Council —Students had the chance to voice their opinions and work to improve our school through Student Council. Student Council continues to be very active & successful!
  • Fundraisers: Students collected over $13,000 in chocolate & trash bags.
  • Field Trips:  Students were able to attend academically focused field trips such as American Royal, Kaleidoscope, Kauffman Performing Arts, Coterie Theater and the Nelson Atkins Museum.
  • Opening Activities: Students begin each day reading. While students wait for classes to begin, they sit quietly in the halls reading or completing unfinished work.
  • Student Improvement Team (SIT): The teams met weekly to discuss academic and behavioral needs of students. Recommendations for classroom interventions were made to support students.
  • Teach or Treat/Health Fair: Staff and students had the time of their lives afterschool dressing up in their favorite costume, going from station to station on the back playground
  • PTO: A very strong Parent Teacher Organization helped foster a valuable home/school connection as well as providing resources and activities for our children and community. Activities included: Skate Nights, Chocolate Sale, Trash Bag Sells, Donuts for Dad, and Muffins for Mom, Room Parties, and helped with Excellence in Education. Way to Go…PTO!
  • Celebrations: Amanda Sudon-Hogan, 1st grade teacher, was selected as John F. Kennedy’s 2017-18 Star Teacher of the Year.
  • Collaboration — Teachers worked collaboratively to meet the needs of all students, with special education and ESL services teachers working with teachers in classrooms. Teachers worked collaboratively in professional learning communities to study and plan together. Two intervention teachers also taught in various ways to better service all students.
  • Technology- Teachers continued to embed technology into their curriculum on a weekly basis.
  • Grade Level Musical Presentations: Each grade level K-5 had an evening musical presentation for the parents at Eisenhower Middle School & Washington HS. Participation has grown greatly in numbers; therefore each presentation had to be moved to a larger venue. 
  • Family Advocacy Program: John F. Kennedy participated in the Family Advocacy Program. This program helped foster strong relationships between the teacher, student, and the student's family.
  • Counselor-Vonda Witt, A Nationally Certified Counselor, assisted in the social and emotional care of the students of JFK. Mrs. Witt successfully implemented the Second Step Program as well as the Young Leaders of Tomorrow leadership group.
  • Recognition – John F. Kennedy Elementary School was recognized by the Kansas School of Character Program as being a school that is “Shifting School Culture”.  Recognition was awarded in Topeka, Kansas in February 2018 by representatives of the Kansas State Board of Education.
  • Education in Excellence- This year John F. Kennedy was excited to continue a community partnership with Forerunners Enrichment Foundation for the purpose of recognizing students that go above and beyond in many ways. This program lets our student know that not only the school but the community is supporting them for their out staying work. Nearly 300 students received the Excellence in Education Award! Way to Go…JFK!
  • Boss Program: Officer Lee & Officer Villanueva mentored 10 young men as a way to keep them focused, and committed to their goals and student achievement. The students of JFK learned key life skills that they can transfer into the real world. This was a WONDERFUL program!

This building report card is a brief summary of how your school and students are performing and the impact of your local school improvement plan. However, it should not be used as a single source to judge students or school accomplishments. No single report can tell the whole story of a district's or school's education program. This report card does not provide information about curriculum, teaching methods, special programs, the "climate" of your school or the performance of individual teachers or administrators.

In addition, this report card is not a way of "rating" or "ranking" schools. Because of the distinct community and student characteristics, direct comparison between schools or districts are invalid. Rank-ordering school districts or schools is a clear misuse of the information. Rather, the information should be used to access local strengths and weaknesses based on past performance and to plan program improvements.
