Joyce A. Behrman

Wyandotte High School, 1949Joyce A. Behrman

Joyce Behrman's life has been entirely centered around nurturing others. After staying home to raise a family of four, she spent 40 years working part- and full-time for the Unified Government's recreation department coordinating programs for children and adults in Kansas City, Kansas.

From cooking and ceramics to volleyball and basketball, she provided a fun and creative outlet for children and adults, keeping them busy and active. She opened and closed the recreational facilities, hired and supervised instructors, worked to recruit participants, and served as coach and mentor to many. She lent an ear, a hand, and a smile to those who needed it, touching hundreds of community members over the years.

A 1949 graduate of Wyandotte High School, Behrman said she had so many teachers who believed in her and nurtured her in school and she wanted to do the same for others.

"I just wanted to touch as many people as I could and get as many children involved in my programs as possible," she said. "It kept them busy and hopefully out of trouble."

She said she has probably received more hugs over the years than she can count and she's had many students come back as adults and offer thanks for her dedication.

Behrman retired in August of 2003 at the age of 71.

She has two pieces of advice for today's students: get your education, and always strive to do the best you can with what you have.
