Only a handful of theatrical works are chosen for performance on The Coterie’s stage as a part of their season. Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is pleased to announce the following student’s original works have been selected for performance in The Young Playwright's Festival at the Coterie Theatre located on level 1 of the Crown Center Shops (2450 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, Mo.) at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 7:

Washington High School freshman Kyra Duwe’s new original work, Among the Whispers, the Champagne and the Stars, has been selected for performance in the Festival.   Her work is a part of a three-way collaboration, WORDS + MUSIC, hatched between teen playwrights from The Coterie, opera composers from the University of Missouri Kansas City Conservatory, and performers from the Lyric Opera.  The three organizations work together to create opera moments from the work adapted from the Coterie Roundtable members’ monologues.

Sumner Academy junior De’Auan McClaine’s new original work, The Numbers Game, will be featured in the dramatic portion of the Festival.  This spoken word poetry presentation will also be performed by De’Auan.  De’Auan's talents have also been featured on The Coterie stage in the 2016 Festival.

Both students are participants in The Coterie's Young Playwrights' Roundtable. The members of the Roundtable have each worked to create their own plays or monologues through the course of the year in workshops at The Coterie.  Under the mentorship of Artistic Director Jeff Church, Roundtable members listen, critique, and provide feedback to each other in order to develop their work.

Kyra was invited to become a member of The Coterie’s Young Playwrights’ Roundtable in January of 2016, after participating in The Coterie’s Reaching the Write Minds playwriting workshop at Arrowhead Middle School.  De’Auan was invited to become a member of Roundtable in October of 2013, after participating in the workshop at Sumner Academy.

Admission for the Young Playwrights’ Festival is $5.00 and reservations are encouraged. Reservations can be made by phone at (816) 474-6552, online at, or in person at The Coterie Box Office. On the day of the performance, the Box Office will open at 5:00 p.m. All seating is general admission with theater doors opening 30 minutes prior to performance.

Congratulations to these Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools students who continue to Inspire Excellence.
