Dr. Steven Pendleton

Harmon High School — Class of 1989Dr. Steven Pendleton

Wrestling for four years hardly seems like the best way to ensure the safety of one's teeth. However, not only did Dr. Steven Pendleton graduate from high school with all his pearly whites intact, but he left with the desire to become a dentist.

Steven's dreams have come true, which is hardly a surprise considering his background. At Harmon High School, where he graduated in 1989, Steven finished in the top 5 percent of his class and was selected Scholastic Athlete of the Year as a senior.

Upon commencement, Steven received a Presidential Scholarship to Kansas City, Kansas Community College and was presented the John Pittman Book Scholarship Award in his two years there.

Steven eventually earned his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in 1994. He then went to the UMKC Dental School where he obtained his doctorate in 1998.

During his time at UMKC Dental School, he initiated the Argentine Mustang Corral Dental Screening Clinic, which provides education and access to dental screenings and promotes the importance of good oral hygiene. Two years after graduating from UMKC Dental School, he participated in the Venezuela Outreach Program, in which he provided dentistry to underprivileged children in orphanages.

Closer to home, Steven performs dental screenings at various Kansas City, Kan. elementary schools throughout the school term. He also has stayed active in the local wrestling scene, helping to establish the Predators Youth Wrestling Club in 2001. He currently serves as the club's head coach. He also served as an assistant coach for the Basehor Bobcats Youth Wrestling Club from 1999 to 2001.

Steven has strived to make a difference in the lives of children because of the strong influence of the teachers and coaches in his community as a youth. Currently living in Tonganoxie with his wife, Amy, and practicing in Kansas City, Kan., he has chosen to utilize his education and degree in the same community in which he grew up, while sharing his experiences with children. In return, after seeing how his hard work and determination have led to his success, he hopes they will realize that all their dreams are attainable.
