Kansas City, KS, July 6, 2017– Gateway Academy Engineering Camp (Gateway) recently celebrated its 10th anniversary of serving middle school students in Kansas City, Kansas. Gateway’s mission is to connect local engineering companies with students who have an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Students in sixth grade attend camp for one week and students in seventh and eighth grades attend for two weeks. Camp locations include Argentine Middle, Central Middle, Coronado Middle and Rosedale Middle.

Each summer Gateway students work on a number of projects spanning the various types of engineering. These engineering categories include: civil, mechanical, electrical, structural and more. Volunteers from local engineering firms, such as Black and Veatch, help students figure out the details of their projects and demonstrate their correlation with actual industry careers.

One of the student projects this summer focused on bottle rocketry. Students were tasked with designing and creating a rocket from a two-liter bottle. They worked together in teams to figure out how much water and air pressure it would take to make their rocket fly the highest. In addition to gaining valuable communication and teamwork skills, students acquired tangible insight into the world of aerospace engineering. Other Gateway projects include making eco-jewelry, roller coasters and building a bridge.

Gateway plays a role in the ongoing work toward a larger goal, known as Diploma+. The goal of Diploma+ is that each student will exit high school prepared for college and careers in a global society, and at every level, each student’s performance is on-track and on-time for success. Gateway helps achieve this goal by giving students a real-world, tangible experience in the engineering industry.
