The decision to close schools because of inclement weather is made by the superintendent of schools. All major radio and television stations will be notified by 6 a.m. and all other venues will be updated. To learn more, visit

Board of Education Highlights for Tuesday, January 8

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools’ Board of Education was honored as a part of School Board Recognition Month during the first board meeting of the year. A proclamation was read and each board member received a certificate of appreciation and a school district lapel pin.

District Focusing on Student Behavioral Health

The meeting also included an update on the work of the district’s Behavioral Health Social Work Program. This program is focused on identifying and supporting the mental health needs of the school district’s students. This is a very important component for the success of student learning. Read More


KCKPS High School Students Participating in Bye Bye Birdie

Students from the high schools of Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools will perform in the All City High School Musical Theatre Troupe presentation of Bye Bye Birdie on January 25 and 26 on the stage of the Performing Arts Center at Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas.

The performances will be held on Friday, January 25 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, January 26 at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. 

Performances are free and open to the public.

*The musical production is sponsored by the Kansas Academy of Theatrical Arts (KATA) in partnership with the school district. See the flyer for details.

Ready for a more rewarding career? If you have a bachelors degree in science, technology, business, engineering, math or english language arts, you can develop the skills needed to make a difference in the lives of students. 

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools has a Teaching Fellows program which will allow you to teach full-time while earning your teaching certification or Masters degree in education. Visit us Thursday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the KCKPS Central Office and Training Center, 2010 N. 59th Street.

Teacher Bailey Bacon Named 2019 Kansas Horizon Award Winner

Bailey Bacon was named as a 2019 Kansas Horizon Award winner by Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson. Bacon is a second-year teacher at J.C. Harmon High School in Kansas City, Kansas. She teaches anatomy, biology and physical science to students in grades ten through 12. Read More


Dr. Valdenia Winn Joins K-12 Education Budget Committee

Dr. Winn will serve as the ranking minority member of the K-12 Education Budget Committee. This has been the main committee in the Legislature dealing with school finance legislation during the last several years. Listening & Learning Tours Q&A
