Positive Alternatives for Children in Trouble (PACT)

Philosophy

Project PACT operates from the premise that people can learn to make responsible decisions. Participants have the learning opportunity to take responsibility for their behavior and the choices they make. People purposely do not make the choice to put at risk the most important things in their lives. Many of us put important things at risk without realizing it.

What is Project PACT?

Project PACT is an alcohol and other drug use educational and prevention program that is required for a student's first time possession or use of alcohol and/or other drugs in school or school property. PACT offers the student and his/her parent(s) an alternative to long-term suspension for the offense.

During the hearing for the infraction, the Principal reviews the requirements of Project PACT with the student and his/her parent/guardian. If PACT is selected as an alternative to long-term suspension, the student and parent/guardian signs a contract agreeing to attend all sessions. Sessions are held on Monday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. for five consecutive weeks. Both the student and a parent/guardian must attend all sessions together.

Students who have previously attended PACT are not eligible for re-admission for a period of three years. Students who have been suspended for dispensing drugs on school property are not eligible for PACT

Project PACT Referral Process:

  1. Ask student if they have been referred to Project PACT in the last three years. If the answer is "yes", the student is not eligible for the program and a long-term suspension must be implemented.
  2. Review the contract and program expectations (within contract) with the parent and student. Secure all the appropriate signatures.
  3. To refer the student in the program, the school contacts Valerie Anzicek in Student Services, 627-4364. It is important to notify start date of students. This assists with planning the number of facilitators needed, and reporting attendance back to schools. Please provide student name, grade level, and student identification number. If a parent and/or participant are handicapped, please provide notification at time of referral so appropriate arrangements can be made. Registration of each student assists with the coordination of space, materials, and facilitators needed.
  4. Sessions are conducted in Spanish and English.
  5. Send or fax the original copy of the contract to Student Services. The fax number is 279-2553. Provide a copy of the contract to the parent/guardian and a copy for the school file.
