Washington High School, 1979

Dr. DeeAnn Richards Behrens has brought smiles to the faces of many Kansas City, Kansas residents over the years. Her established dental practice, Family Dental Care, is only part of the reason. Her passion for the community and her dedication to children and families are positive forces that have impacted so many.

Along with meeting the dental health needs of her patients, both young and old, Dr. Behrens participates in a number of dental programs that serve those in need. They include Give Kids a Smile, which provides free dentistry to kids, and the Kansas Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, which contracts with dentists to provide dental care to people with disabilities. She also works with the Duchesne Clinic, a medical clinic in Kansas City, Kansas that meets the health needs of those who have little or no money.

Outside of the dental health realm, she serves as a mentor and teacher to children. She dedicates one evening a week to Tutor-the-Computer, a program at her church that matches caring adults with children to provide homework help and teach computer skills.

She is a former site council member for Claude Huyck Elementary, and has served as a long-time vice president of their PTA, coordinating the planning, fund raising and installation of new playground equipment for the school. She is a member of the Kansas City, Kansas Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership 2000 Class XIV.

A 1979 graduate of Washington High School, Behrens earned a B.A. from the University of Kansas and her D.D.S. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She said growing up, she always knew college was in her future, and it’s a goal she tries to instill in all her patients and the youth with whom she comes into contact.

“I tell them, ‘The world is so much bigger than we are. There are so many more things we can do with our lives than we know. College is a place where we can figure that out.'”
