Since graduating from law school 16 years ago, Greg Goheen has served his community as an attorney and a volunteer with a focus on providing assistance and guidance to area youth and those working with them.

As a shareholder at the law firm of McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips, P.A., he has handled, among other things, a variety of legal matters for nonprofit organizations and governmental entities throughout the states of Kansas and Missouri. He has supported and guided school districts and educational institutions in their endeavors to mold and shape the minds of tomorrow, while at the same time dealing with a myriad of issues facing the schools such as funding, labor and employment, government regulations, special education, privacy, due process and civil rights.

Outside of work, Goheen has also shown a strong commitment to the community. He administers the James R. Goheen Scholarship. Named in honor of his father, it has provided 13 graduates of the KCK Public Schools with funds toward their education. He has presented numerous seminars to entities such as the Wyandotte County Bar Association, Metro School Personnel Administrators, Kansas Association of School Business Officials, Kansas Association of School Boards and the KCK Area Chamber of Commerce. He also volunteers his time to tutor economically disadvantaged youth, gives presentations to middle school students and acts as a mentor through the Overcoming Diversity Mentor Program.

Goheen credits the support of his family and community for enabling him to succeed in school. He remembers the strong and positive examples his teachers and principals set while he was growing up in the district.

His advice for today’s students is: don’t look at education as job training, but as an opportunity to expand your horizons and bring new opportunities.
