Jon Taylor is the Command Master Chief at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

He has 124 senior enlisted personnel who ensure the compliance of command procedures and policies which affect the mission, readiness, welfare, and morale of the Midshipmen and members of the command. He has been with the Navy for 25 years.

Growing up in a military family, Taylor knew at an early age that he would follow the same path. It was familiar to him, and being from a family of five children, there was little money for college.

Upon entering the Navy, he served as a collection/systems analyst in cryptology support, around the world and on multiple surface combatants. He studied to be a CLASSIC OWL (Mobile Communications Detachment) operator in 1993 and graduated with honors, and later became an instructor. He has served in Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield, Operations Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom and various other operations and Joint Task Forces.

He credits his parents for giving him reasons to believe in himself, and his high school math teacher for nurturing his math abilities. He provided him with challenges to enhance his learning and to feed his love of problem solving and anything involving computers.

Although he has a successful career, he wanted to set a good example for his own children, sending the message that education is important. So he spent nine years earning his college degree, taking one or two classes at a time, whatever his schedule would allow. He received his bachelor of science in information systems in 2009, which makes him proud.

“The one thing that the world can’t take from you is your education,” he said.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (with two gold stars) and Navy Achievement Medal (with one Silver Star).
