KCKPS Hires New Cabinet Team Members to Fill Vacant Positions

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is pleased to announce the hiring of Samrie Devin as the Associate Superintendent of Human Resources and Steve Lilly as the Chief Operations Officer. Ms. Devin  will start on March 14, 2022.  Mr. Lilly will begin in July 2022 as we start the 2022-23 school year.

Their combined experience and leadership will be a valuable asset to operations and creating a culture that improves employee engagement and productivity, which supports our overall goal towards student achievement,” said Superintendent Dr. Anna Stubblefield.

Christal Watson, Executive Director of the Kansas City, Kansas Schools Foundation for Excellence, provided an update to board members. on fundraising and contributions this year.

AVID

Board of Education approved the purchase of  a multiyear proposal and agreement with AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination). AVID will help to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

Board Reports

The Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education accepted as an informational item and discussion on the National Football League (NFL) and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Grassroots Program Grant award to USD 500. The district submitted a grant on June 28, 2021, to NFL/LISC for The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools Eisenhower Field Renovation. The application included the following:

  • Amount Requested- $250,000
  • Matching Funds from USD500 – $550,875
  • Total Project Cost – $800,875
  • Use of Funds- Installation of an artificial playing surface
  • KCKPS Field Maintenance Plan (approximately $9,000 yearly

“I don’t want to get lost in the conversation the opportunity that does exist to receive a grant like this, for our community to invest in facilities that are outdated. This is a really positive message for our community,” said Randy Lopez, Board President.

Budget Priorities

Dr. Anna Stubblefield provided an update on the District’s anticipated FY 2023 Board Budget Priorities.

The superintendent shared the following information:

  • 2021-2022 Base per pupil = $4,706
  • 2022-2023 Base per pupil = $4,846
  • Additional funding = $6,900,000
  • Known cost increases
  • Health insurance premiums $2,400,00
  • Discretionary balance = $4,500,000

Thought Exchange Results-School Bell Times Revision Proposal and Middle School Ridership Eligibility Change for SY 2022-2023

Dr. Stubblefield shared results from the ThoughtExchange survey with members of the Board regarding shifting start times to provide more transportation to our middle school students.

Exchange Summary: Considering the challenges and benefits of each, what are your thoughts and questions about the proposed options?

“The reality is we have a shortage of bus drivers and revising these times for middle and high schools we can more easily address this issue,” said Dr. Stubblefield.
